Trying Differently Rather than Harder

THIS TRAINING IS FULL. TO BE ADDED TO THE WAITLIST, PLEASE EMAIL BCCF@BCCF.CA

Fetal Alcohol / Neurobehavioural conditions (FA/NB) encompass the spectrum of brain-based conditions with a wide range of symptoms. This workshop establishes a research-informed foundation linking brain function with behaviours and introduces an emerging best practices approach to developing effective person-specific strategies in all settings.

Designed for service and support professionals, the workshop provides a common language for participants to enhance ongoing collaboration and networking among those working with people with FASD in all systems. Participants in past trainings have included child, youth and family support professionals, teachers, nurses, physicians, lawyers, judges, mental health and addictions professionals, psychologists, and social workers, and employers, among others.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Develop an understanding of FASD as an invisible brain-based physical condition.

  2. Identify examples of positive outcomes for people with FASD and how these are a result of application of a brain-based approach to understanding and developing strategies.

  3. Introduce the neurobehavioural screening tool and define primary, secondary and tertiary behavioural characteristics of FASD and other brain-based conditions.

  4. Understand how identification provides the basis for developing appropriate and effective accommodations to prevent challenging behaviours without limiting or inappropriately enabling.

  5. Discuss the fit between standard behavioural interventions and FASD and other brain-based conditions, and recognize why good techniques may not work.

  6. Understand the source of emotional reactions to neurobehavioural symptoms that clash with personal values and expectations.

  7. Understand application of a Functional Neurobehavioural Assessment to support developing person-specific accommodations in all settings.
