Gain insight into a child’s emotional world

Gain a deeper understanding of the emotional world of a child, and assist with emotional regulation and coping. Learn techniques and gain communications skills to enhance your work with young children.

Presentation Highlights: 

  • Emotion regulation and why it matters
  • The developing brain: understanding why emotion dysregulation may peak during different phases of development
  • Neuroplasticity of the brain and how our responses can actually influence positive brain development in our children 
  • The impact of environment, temperament and family influences 
  • What to do when children lose their cool
  • An approach for responding to emotional distress, about how to talk to children 
  • Pitfalls of adult strategies, including both “pushing” and “protecting”, and how to manage our own reactions in high distress situations 

Presenter Biography 

Michelle Srdanovic is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology from Simon Fraser University. Over the last 15 years, Michelle has worked with families, couples and children using expressive, cognitive-behavioural and emotion-focused therapeutic practices, as well provided community education on the topics of trauma and anxiety. 

She currently divides her time between counselling a broad range of clients in her private practice, supervising graduate interns, and serving as Faculty at BCIT where she teaches psychology and counselling skills.
