We all know that life comes with ups and downs.
In today's fast changing world, challenges seem to be more complicated, and coming at us faster than ever before. Resilience—the ability to cope with difficulties and bounce back, to thrive even when things are hard—has never been more needed. Luckily, resilience is not an innate trait a few people are born with, but is a capacity that we can all develop.
Drawing from resilience research, this interactive 6-hour workshop (delivered over two 3-hour sessions) builds on an understanding of resilience as a modifiable balance between risk and protective factors in our lives. Together we explore individual and environmental factors that help us cope and stay well during times of stress or adversity, and learn practical strategies to strengthen these assets to be more resilient.
Designed for caring professionals working with children and/or families, participants will develop a deeper understanding of resilience, create a plan to strengthen their own resilience and learn ways to nurture these same capacities in the children and families they serve. The two-session format allows for exploration and practice, moving from understanding and building personal resilience foundations in Session 1 to applying resilience principles in professional practice during Session 2.
Learning Objectives
- Learn about resilience as a dynamic balance between risk and protective factors, and how it affects mental health and well-being, and our capacity to cope and thrive.
- Be able to identify at least 5 external and 5 internal resilience assets that help us cope and stay well during times of stress or adversity
- Assess their own resilience landscape, identifying personal assets and opportunities for growing resilience
- Explore practical strategies to strengthen their personal resilience in daily work and life for sustainable wellbeing
- Understand resilience building across different developmental stages, from early childhood through adolescence
- Discuss how to build supportive environments and interactions that foster resilience capacities in children and families
- Create an action plan for strengthening resilience—both for themselves and those they support
Together we will build our understanding and a plan for strengthening resilience through learning, stories, activities, discussions, and reflection exercises.
