Inspiring the Heart, Regulating the Body: Enhancing Social-Emotional Learning in Young Parent Programs

The only conference of its kind in BC that targets the professional development needs specifically of Young Parent Program staff!  The focus of this year's conference for The Alliance for Professionals Serving Young Parents is emotional regulation and social-emotional wellness.  Note: this is a draft agenda; the official conference brochure will be available at a later date.

Friday, October 19, 8:30AM to 6:30PM

  • 8:30 – 9:30 AM: Registration and light refreshments while YPP staff connect, followed by conference opening and a keynote presentation (tentatively by Kim Schonert-Reichl of the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) at UBC). 
     
  • 9:30-11:30 AM: Sessions include, and may not be limited to: 
    • Secure and Calm (experiential workshop to explore a toolkit that helps children regulate themselves and promote social emotional development). A Dalai Lama Center workshop.
    • Emotional Regulation with Children who Require Extra Support: Supported Child Development Workshop for ECE’s to learn assessment tools and emotional regulation strategies 
    • Visit to North Shore YPP and discussion about their parenting group model
       
  • 11:45 AM-1:25 PM: Catered lunch by Well Fed, a catering company from North Vancouver (included in conference rate).  
  • 1:30 – 3:30 PM: Sessions include, and may not be limited to:
    • Reconciliation and Indigenous Place in the Early Years (exploration of the ways ECEs can introduce indigenous place and perspectives with young children): Kristin Webster
    • Interactive Dialogue with MCFD Staff and presentation of APSYP Survey results

  • 5:00 - 6:30 PM: Connecting opportunity with appetizers and cash bar (included in conference rate; location TBA)

Saturday, October 20, 8:30-3:30

  • 8:15 AM: Saturday only registration and chance to connect with other YPP staff over light refreshments. 
     
  • 8:30 – 11:30: Workshop sessions include but may not be limited to:
    • Introductory to Emotional Regulation for Young Parents and their Children; Kim Barthel
    • *Not confirmed* Reconciliation and Indigenous Place in the Early Years (exploration of the ways ECEs can introduce indigenous place and perspectives with young children):  Kristin Webster
    • Visit to North Shore YPP and discussion about their parenting group model
       
  • 11:30– 12:45: Lunch
     
  • 1:00 – 4:00: Workshop sessions include but may not be limited to:
    • Emotional Regulation for Young Parents and their Children: Part 2:  Kim Barthel
    • Emotional Regulation with Children who Require Extra Support: Supported Child Development Workshop for ECE’s to learn assessment tools and emotional regulation strategies 
  • 4:0: Conference closes

Rooms are on hold at the following two hotels withink walking distance of the conference venue:
1.     Lonsdale Quay Hotel. $139.00 per room per night plus taxes:  call 1-800-836-6111 and ask for Alliance for Professionals Service Young Parents group rate.  Reserve by September 18, 2018.
